Wall Street: A Movie Review

“Wall Street” is a classic film of the 80s business. This is the work of Oliver Stone, is set in New York City, was released in December 1987, just two months after the stock market crash that year. With all the stars, including Charlie Sheen, Michael Douglas, Martin Sheen, Daryl Hannah, James Spader, Terence Stamp, Hal Holbrook and Sean Young, the film follows Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen), a stockbroker, naive not hungry yet willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his dream of money and power.

movie opens in the midst of organized chaos that environment Bud worked at Jackson & Steinham brokerage firm. It soon became clear that he is determined to pursue an interview with his hero, Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas). Gekko is a highly competitive corporate raider, known for its ability to find undervalued companies, buy them, and then sell their assets for a quick profit, regardless of the effect of his actions on others. Once called Gekko’s office for 39 consecutive days in a failed attempt to arrange a meeting, Bud goes to Gekko directly to present him with a birthday gift. Offering expensive cigars and little information on the airline associated with his father, Bud quickly ingratiates himself with Gekko. Sensing something special in the Bud, Gekko took him under his wing, presenting him with the opportunity to be great if Bud has what it takes.
Tempting by “privilege” Gekko throwing to him, including expensive meals, big paydays, and some eye-candy blonde with the name Darien (Daryl Hannah); Bud quickly lost on the way of corporate greed and corruption. However, Bud soon realized the good life can come at a price. His insider trading has attracted the attention of the SEC. Not only that, but shady deal with Gekko jeopardize the future of the airline whose father is a union representative. Bud is faced with a moral dilemma – to continue the path to wealth and power, although the mine-laden, or face the consequences of his actions and the fight will Gekko’s.

Some films are better the weather has been for years and pointed to the reality, flaws and errors of the financial system and its players, from “Wall Street”. Gekko is the antagonist realistic that we find ourselves we love to hate. Daryl Hannah, playing the love interest of Bud, nails the role of the materialistic and money hungry version, almost female Gordon Gekko. Martin Sheen did a remarkable job describing hardworking blue-collar dad and unwavering moral stone in the life of Bud.

While the title itself emits the theme of money, power, and greed, we find ourselves drawn more to the story to choose between right and wrong, and influence our decisions on the people around us. “Wall Street” is a fantastic movie if you have any interest in or knowledge of the financial industry. This is definitely a five out of five and have to see!
